Drown junot diaz summary sparknotes5/9/2023 ![]() When the family arrives at Tío Miguel and Tía Yrma's apartment, Tío Miguel is the first to greet them. He punishes Yunior by jamming a finger into Yunior's cheek and the family drives the rest of the way to the Bronx in silence. However, once they cross the George Washington bridge, Yunior begins to "feel woozy" and he soon throws up out of the car window to Papi's great irritation. ![]() The car ride begins smoothly enough, which causes Papi to loosen up. He warns Yunior that he better not get sick in the car. He quickly gets angry when Mami tells him that she fed the children because Yunior gets carsick whenever they have a car trip. He arrives at six, right after work, and wordlessly goes straight to the shower to clean the evidence of his Puerto Rican mistress off his body. On the day of the party, the family has dressed up nicely and is waiting for Papi to come home. It is clear that time has passed between this story and the previous one because the family is living in the United States and Yunior mentions his little sister, Madai, who was born after the family immigrated to the US. This short story begins with Yunior explaining that his aunt and uncle have moved to the United States and the family has decided to celebrate their arrival. ![]()

![]() ![]() I found its lack of a glossary a brief challenge, but everything becomes clear in context, or is clarified when relevant (for example: the nuances of polite address aren’t vital – we’re always told who is of rank). It offers very little support in terms of explaining world-building, but that’s equally true of The Goblin Emperor. While I admit to the teensiest disappointment when it became evident we wouldn’t be revisiting Maia, it evaporated on first contact with this quiet, compassionate tale.Īlthough it is set after The Goblin Emperor and contains spoilers relating to the death of the previous Emperor, The Witness For The Dead stands alone and will work as a point of entry to this world. ![]() ![]() The Witness For The Dead is a sidequel rather than a sequel, focusing on the prelate of Ulis who helped Maia investigate his father’s death. I was over the moon when I heard that Katherine Addison was writing another book set in the world of The Goblin Emperor. When a woman is murdered, Thara is determined to do right by her – whatever the cost. But sometimes the dead have dark secrets. A reserved man haunted by his own ghosts, he asks the dead questions to confirm burial rites and inheritances, and to ease the hearts and minds of the living. Thara Celehar can speak to the recently dead. ![]()

Relish knisley5/8/2023 ![]() ![]() When Lucy’s birthday rolls around, Mom doesn’t bring cupcakes to school for all her classmates she brings a crème brulée the size of a manhole cover, and captivates the kids with the blowtorch. Occasionally a chef hands her a profiterole. Little Lucy plays on the floors of the restaurant kitchens where mom works. The elder Knisley catered parties in upstate New York, cheesemongered at the original Dean and DeLuca, and hosted an annual Easter feast for fellow chefs, bakers, restaurateurs, and caterers that was an orgy of farm-fresh, epicurean treats.Īs described in Knisley’s thoroughly charming, book-length comic, the mother-and-daughter’s foodie adventures are enviable. What makes Knisley (below), the author of the graphic-novel memoir Relish: My Life in the Kitchen, a bit different is that her godfather is a restaurant critic, her uncle ran a gourmet food shop, and her mom was a foodie through-and-through. ![]() Just to see how high you could get and if you would live. Or perhaps you poured Pixy Stix –refined sugar, with additional sugar –into your mouth two at a time. (They are good, though, right?)
